How to Convert a Blackstone Tabletop Griddle to Bulk Propane
The Blackstone 17” and Blackstone 22” griddles come set up for a 1-pound propane tank. That’s fine for camping, but a 1-pound tank doesn’t last long — you’ll burn through it in 1–2 cook sessions. Converting to a 20-pound bulk propane tank gives you roughly 20x more propane and eliminates constant refills.
The conversion takes about 5 minutes and requires only a replacement adapter hose.
What You Need
You don’t need to replace the griddle’s regulator — just the hose that connects it to the fuel source.
Blackstone Replacement Regulator Hose — Blackstone sells their own, but third-party adapters from Amazon work just as well and often have a longer hose, which is useful if the tank isn’t sitting right next to the griddle.
One end connects to the griddle’s existing regulator where the 1-pound tank screwed in. The other end connects to a standard 20-pound (or larger) propane tank via a standard QCC1/Type 1 fitting.
Bulk Propane Tank Size Reference
A 20-pound tank is the most practical choice for home use — manageable weight, widely available for exchange. Larger tanks reduce refill frequency but add weight and don’t make sense for a portable griddle.
| Tank Size | Weight Empty | Weight Full |
|---|---|---|
| 1 lb. | 2 lbs. | 3 lbs. |
| 5 lbs. | 9 lbs. | 14 lbs. |
| 20 lbs. | 17 lbs. | 37 lbs. |
| 30 lbs. | 24 lbs. | 54 lbs. |
How to Convert to Bulk Propane
Step 1: Turn off and cool down
Make sure the griddle is off and completely cool. Turn all control knobs to off.
Step 2: Remove the 1-pound tank
Unscrew the current 1-pound propane tank from the griddle’s regulator. Set it aside.
Step 3: Attach the adapter hose to the griddle
Take the replacement adapter hose and screw the griddle-side fitting onto the regulator where the 1-pound tank was connected. Thread it in hand-tight, then snug with a wrench.
Step 4: Connect to the bulk propane tank
Screw the other end of the adapter hose onto the bulk propane tank. The QCC1 fitting threads onto the tank valve — hand-tight is usually sufficient, but firm is better than loose.
Step 5: Test before cooking
Open the bulk propane tank valve slowly. Check all connections for the smell of gas — if you detect any, close the valve immediately and re-examine the fittings. Brush soapy water on the connections and look for bubbles if you want a more reliable leak check.
Once confirmed no leaks, light the griddle normally and check that the burner flames look even and consistent.
Switching Back
The adapter hose installs and removes in under a minute, so you can switch between 1-pound and bulk propane depending on where you’re using the griddle. Take the adapter off and screw the 1-pound tank back on for camping or tailgating; connect the adapter for home use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting to bulk propane change how the griddle cooks?
No. The adapter hose connects to the same regulator, so the gas pressure delivered to the burners is identical to the 1-pound setup. Flame behavior and heat output are the same.
Will any 20-pound propane tank work?
Yes. Standard 20-pound propane tanks use the QCC1/Type 1 fitting, which is what the adapter hose is designed for. Any standard propane tank used for gas grills will work.
Do I need to buy the Blackstone brand adapter?
No. Third-party adapter hoses work fine. The main thing to check is hose length — Blackstone’s version is shorter, so if you want the tank sitting further away from the griddle, a third-party hose with 4–5 feet of length gives more flexibility.
Is a bulk propane conversion permanent?
No — the adapter screws on and off in under a minute. You can switch back to a 1-pound tank whenever you want.
Does the conversion void the warranty?
Using an aftermarket adapter hose instead of the official Blackstone hose may technically affect warranty coverage for the connection components. The griddle itself is unaffected.
