Review of the FireDisc Cooker

Grilling is the ultimate way to achieve outdoor cooking, but traditional grills can be bulky and are difficult to set up. The FireDisc Cooker is great for the backyard but also extremely easy to take on the go.

Fire discs are not a new concept, but the FireDisc cooker takes a proven concept and makes it even better. If you plan on doing some cooking outside or want to take something on a camping trip or fishing trip to make meals easy, then the FireDisc may be what you’re looking for.

It has versatility, is easily set up and taken down, is compact, and is designed to make a large variety of delicious food. This FireDisc review will cover everything you need to know about the FireDisc cooker and help you decide if this is the product you’re looking for.

Design and Construction

Part of the beauty of the FireDisc is the simplicity of the design. There are 2 models, the FireDisc 36” and a FireDisc 24” and both red or black.

While both designs have the same sized disc, the only real difference is in height. The FireDisc 36” is a foot taller than the FireDisc 24” but otherwise, there’s no difference between them.

The FireDisc is made out of carbon steel, making it incredibly durable and fit to be used anywhere you’d like. It’s considered bulletproof, and through an intense crafting process, it can withstand just about anything you can throw at it.

Powder coating and the carbon steel makeup make the FireDisc extremely resistant to corrosion. Not only do you not have to worry about using it around or in the water, but you can rest assured that the FireDisc will last for a long time after purchase.

The disc itself is 22 inches in diameter, so you’ll have plenty of room for everything you want to cook. The hottest point will always be directly in the center due to the disc’s shape, with reduced heat leading up to the edges. Keep this in mind based on what you’re cooking.

Don’t worry about cooking on uneven surfaces because the stands are adjustable based on the terrain you’re on. The two different heights are just the max that they will go. The 36” version simulates cooking in your kitchen at standard counter height, while the 24” FireDisc is closer to a traditional camp cooker.

Separating and combining the two pieces is what makes setting up the FireDisc so simple. The disc settles easily onto the stand and pops right off when you’ve finished. Hooking it up to propane is a quick task, and you can begin cooking as soon as the center heats up.

FireDisc Cooking Performance

The FireDisc cooker is perfect for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The FireDisc can handle anything from meat to vegetables and even beans, making it great for nearly any skillet-style recipe.

You’ll have to season the disc yourself, but that’s as simple as heating the FireDisc and applying cooking oil or lard across the cooktop. This process may need to be repeated 3-4 times to complete the initial seasoning. The more you use the FireDisc, the more flavor your future meals will receive and the better the non-stick coating will be.

There are three levels to the heat in the disc, so picking which temperature to cook your food is as easy as shifting it inside the disc. The center has the highest heat and slowly diminishes as you move towards the rim.

It’s sometimes best to start in the middle for a nice sear and then slowly move to the outskirts as you add additional food to the center. The FireDisc tends to heat up very quickly, so you won’t have to sit around waiting for a warm-up session.

The extensive powder coating helps to transmit all that heat quickly, and you’ll be able to start a nice sear on your meat within minutes of turning it on. Just remember to rotate your food out of the center quickly, or you risk overcooking it.

FireDisc Cleaning and Maintenance

Thanks to the extreme 450° powder coating and the carbon steel frame, there’s not much you have to do to keep the FireDisc in good condition. Just don’t smash it against any rocks and give the exterior an occasional wipe down, and you’re good to go.

The seasoned cooking surface makes the whole disc non-stick so that you can easily remove any food scraps. To clean the cooking surface, wipe out the disc with water to clear the debris, then reapply some oil to keep the disc seasoned.

There’s no need to pull out any soap or start scrubbing at the disc. In fact, cleaning it with soap will strip the seasoning, so you don’t want to do that. The only time you’ll clean it with soap and water is when you first get it before doing the initial seasoning.

Firedisc Portability

Portability is a critical component of any device used to cook outdoors and just so happens to be the FireDisc cooker’s best feature. You can easily break down either version to make transportation easier. Please don’t be worried about how easily the disc slides off the stand; it’s still secure enough that your food isn’t going to tumble to the ground with one wrong move.

Despite the thin-looking stand and the entire FireDisc cooker’s size, it does have a bit of heft to it. In total, it weighs 58 pounds, so don’t expect to strap it to a backpack for a hike.
You can split the load with someone taking the disc and another person grabbing the stand pieces with some help.

You can also use the portable 16.4oz propane tank for additional mobility if you plan on taking the FireDisc camping. If you want to keep it on your back porch for some home cooking, you can still use a more permanent 20-pound propane tank.
